Photo Transfer in Cold War Europe

Collection launched: 07 May 2018
While official press photography was subject to press control in the same way as text, photographers and photojournalists could still work as freelancers or develop strategies of subversion when leaving the official path of socialist realism. The aim of this special collection is to present case studies on formal as well as informal photo transfer during the Cold War, taking into account the non-verbal and ambiguous nature of photography as well as the importance of personal and professional networks and placing it at the very centre of a notion of shifting ideas, travelling concepts and a joint Cold War culture.
