In Memoriam: Svetlana Boym
The editors of HCM are very sad to receive the news about the untimely death of Svetlana Boym, Curt Hugo Reisinger Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures and Comparative Literature at Harvard University, and esteemed member of our Advisory Board. With her strongly interdisciplinary approach, working as an artist, curator, novelist, playwright, scholar and philosopher, Svetlana Boym offered highly interesting insights, among many other things, into the concept of modernity, combining academic rigor with a highly personal approach. Her introduction of the term ‘off-modern’, exploring the ‘side-alleys’ of modern history largely hidden behind a teleological belief in ‘Western’ modernization, inspired our editorial approach to the concept of modernity.
